Promoting building trades to middle school students

education

In collaboration with experts in the sector, we have designed an educational booklet with the association De l'or dans les mains, with the aim of promoting certain building trades that are often misunderstood and sometimes devalued among teenagers.
Following on from the educational booklet on craft trades, this new tool completes the opportunities for young people to project themselves into their future working lives.

Raising awareness of building trades and inspiring new vocations

To capture attention, the booklet opens with a 5-panel comic strip by illustrator Moon Li. The comic tells the story of two children who, as they make their way around a school undergoing renovation, explore the building trades through their encounters with the various trades involved.
The story highlights the diversity and complementarity of the trades around a construction site, where each explains the reasons why they love their job.

The following shares inspiring testimonials from professionals in the field, and provides selected information on some of the specific features of the trades of bricklayer, tiler, drywaller and roofer.
Games and fun activities are also included to arouse the curiosity of the teenagers, while providing informations on tools and manufacturing processes.

Deconstructing stereotypes

This tool also aims to deconstruct stereotypes, whatever they may be. For example, it seeks to question the fears surrounding this career choice (particularly those of family and friends), to demonstrate the diversity of the trades and to stress the need to work on building and preserving our heritage.
Given the strong stereotype present in this sector, the content features female bricklayers or tilers, to help open up these trades to women.
